Golf in the colonial heartland

Palm lined beaches, exotic islands, busy hustle & bustle cities, Malaysia has it all, even the choice of dozens of beautiful golf courses to go play. But, where to choose. Let me give you some thoughts.

Glenmarie Golf & Country Club

Most people will find it easier to fly straight in to Kuala Lumpur, so let’s start there. Designed to accommodate all skill levels, Danau Golf Club is a walk-through Malaysian experience, aesthetically sculpted with its indigenous flora in mind, even the ubiquitous palm and rubber trees from the plantations, have been blended in to give that added charm. Offering day & night golf, Glenmarie Golf & Country Club continuously aims to position itself as one of the most prestigious and premier golf clubs in the country, which includes its first class facilities. This is a great club to bring the non-golfer as there are lots of other things they can do, such as indoor and outdoor tennis, squash, swimming, there’s a gym and even a library. How about a course that has it all, history, class and a strong foundation? The Royal Selangor Golf Club has all that, and more. Established in 1893 this 36 hole course is unique and has kept up with change over those many years. It’s had many reasons to renovate over the years, including after WWII, turning it into a major league player when it comes to hosting events.

Gunung Raya Golf Resort

Kota Kinabalu makes for a great stop over, in the East of Malaysia, just a short plane ride from KL. There are a few choice courses to play, one of them being the Borneo Golf & Country Club, a Jack Nicklaus links course. It has amazing views of the sea and incorporates long fairways as expected from a championship course. The oldest course there, established in 1906 and affiliated with St Andrews in Scotland in those early years, is Kudat Golf club. It underwent some big changes in 2002 bringing it into the modern century, with some beautiful holes jutting out into the sea. Finally, how about the Paradise island of Langkawi. There isn’t a vast choice of courses to play, only 3 actually, but it is one of those places you really should visit and experience, and play a round when you’re there. The one I would recommend is the Gunung Raya Golf Resort, another Max Wexler designed course. Sprawled over 300 acres of former rubber plantation, you’ll encounter beautiful rolling greens, panoramic tees, and impeccable fairways that will whet any avid golfer’s appetite. We have a lot of experience with regards to Malaysia, it’s one of our favourite playgrounds. So please let us advise you, feel free to email us at info@golfasion.com and ask all the questions you want, after all, it’s your holiday, and we want to make sure we give you the best start possible.
